The Selina holiday apartment is additionally heated with heating panels in the living room, kitchen and bathroom (see extra sheet).
The thermostats attempt to reach the temperature set on the display. This means they heat until the set temperature is reached. Therefore, the radiator may become very hot; it then cools down again after being switched off in order to repeatedly reach the desired temperature.
If windows/patio doors are open, the thermostat ends the heating process and restarts it automatically after 15 minutes.
Of course, you can also adjust the thermostat manually. However, the thermostats always revert to the preset, automatic temperature after a certain period of time.
To do this, simply adjust the outer ring of the thermostat; the new temperature will be displayed digitally.
Never turn off the entire thermostat!

UNICORN CAVE
Herzberg-Scharzfeld
Telephone: 49 (0) 5521-997559
The "Harz Dolomites" located between Herzberg and Bad Lauterberg, with the legendary Unicorn Cave, hold a special place as a significant natural experience in a very small area.
The myth of the unicorn has always captivated people. For centuries, the powdered bones of the "Unicornu fossile," the excavated unicorn, were sought after throughout Europe as medicine. Even famous scholars like Goethe and Leibniz searched for them. And even today, younger visitors to the cave frequently ask about the unicorn. However, all these bones actually come from long-extinct Ice Age animals such as cave bears and cave lions. Furthermore, the cave was inhabited by Neanderthals for many tens of thousands of years.
IBERGER TRIPOLSTEINCAVE
Bad Grund, An der Tropfsteinhöhle 1
Telephone: 49 (0) 5327-829391
The Iberg Stalactite Cave – Fascination of the Underworld. Located in the Iberg mountain is the Iberg Stalactite Cave, millions of years old. Since 1874, it has been one of the Harz Mountains' most famous show caves and a popular tourist attraction. Its rare formation makes it unique as a show cave and a particularly important cave for scientists worldwide.
It lies deep within the limestone of a former coral reef. Petrified marine creatures from ancient times can be found here. With its much younger sinter cascades, mighty stalactites, and beautiful details and colors, children experience the mysterious underworld as the fairytale realm of the kind-hearted dwarf king Hübich, who, according to legend, lived with his people in the Iberg.
The caves in the Iberg did not form like "ordinary" caves, but in a way that is extremely rare worldwide: rusting, the weathering of iron ore, intensified the cave formation. As a result, the Iberg has been of great importance for historical iron ore mining and natural cave exploration since around 100 BC.

GRUBE SAMSON
Sankt Andreasberg Am Samson 2
Telephone: 49 (0) 5582-1249
The Samson Mine in Sankt Andreasberg is one of the most important mining monuments in Europe. From 1521 to 1910, mainly silver ore was mined here, and for a long time the mine was among the deepest mines in the world.
Particularly impressive is the world's only still-functioning "Fahrkunst" (a type of mechanical wheel), which is now considered an international monument of machinery. Also worth seeing are the two historic waterwheels – the 9-meter-high reversing wheel from 1820 and the 12-meter-diameter art wheel, which is still powered by water during guided tours, just as it was centuries ago.
Today's complex is the last fully preserved mine of the Upper Harz ore mining industry and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2010 – as part of the Upper Harz Water Management System.

During the tours, members of the working group provide hands-on, interactive mining experiences. Group tours are also available during the week by prior arrangement. Admission is free, but donations are welcome to help ensure the continued maintenance of the mines.
This is truly an experience for the whole family.

School classes and groups are just as welcome as families with children and individuals. Learn about the language and customs of the people who lived underground. By the way, we always use the word "fahren" (to travel), even when we're moving through the tunnels on foot.

exciting crime novels
Nothing to read?
No problem !
Find out what happens when the "Miss Marple of the Harz Mountains" goes on the hunt for criminals...
We have some exciting and entertaining crime stories from the Harz Mountains for you:
These are the crime novels by Helmut Exner, set primarily in the Harz Mountains, which employ the region's earthy language and quirky characters. It's the blend of suspense, witty dialogue, and a penchant for the bizarre that makes these books so original. Lilly Höschen, the old lady, has become a beloved recurring character. But these crime novels have nothing to do with gore orgies or a string of gruesome acts. It's simply wonderful to be so engrossed in a book that you can't put it down and to be in a really good mood while reading it.
You will find the books in the basement, on the shelf to the left of the sauna.
Enjoy reading!
Band 1 : Walpurgismord
On Walpurgis Night in 1990, Miriam and Georg Besserdich vanished without a trace. They had planned a hike through the Harz Mountains' moorland to be alone and talk about their problems. Amadeus, the couple's twelve-year-old son, is being raised by his eccentric great-aunt Lilly. Twenty years later, Lilly and Amadeus are confronted with several strange crimes. Among other things, Lilly finds a murdered woman in her garden. What really happened twenty years ago? Could it be that Georg Besserdich, presumed dead, is involved? It's Walpurgis Night again, and something terrible is happening again. Amadeus and his quirky great-aunt Lilly only have until midnight. The case must be solved by then, or another person will die. The romantic Harz Mountains, with their legends of witches, their places and landscapes—sometimes idyllic, sometimes wild or rugged—form the backdrop for this mysterious crime story. A touch of humor is essential.
Volume 2: Sauschläger's Paradise
People are vanishing without a trace in a secret cemetery. The Sauschläger couple, two local characters from the Upper Harz region, naively become involved with the Russian mafia. Lilly Höschen, the eccentric senior high school teacher, and her nephew Amadeus are drawn into these events, which Inspector Schneider and his colleague Gisela Berger try to solve. A rather bizarre crime case, the kind that could probably only happen in the Harz Mountains.
Volume 3: The Segeberg Connection
Gisela has moved to Schleswig-Holstein, where she works for the State Criminal Police Office. Barely arrived, she receives a cry for help from the Harz Mountains. Her old friend Lilly Höschen feels threatened. Two former colleagues have already died under mysterious circumstances, and she fears she'll be the third. Meanwhile, Gisela has her hands full. Her neighbors are men who are murdering women.
Volume 4: Lilly Höschen and her instinct for murder
Following the unexpected death of her boss, Detective Inspector Gisela Weniger is offered the position of head of her department. With her husband's support, the new mother accepts the post and abruptly ends her maternity leave. Back in the daily grind of police work, she's quickly swept up in a series of murders and the kidnapping of a colleague. Gisela receives unexpected help in solving the cases from her lovable, but at times equally exasperating, friend Lilly Höschen from the Harz Mountains. The elderly woman solves the kidnapping case quickly. The murders, however, prove far more difficult. Above all, there's the risk of further crimes if the perpetrators aren't caught soon. Lilly suspects a mysterious neighbor and eventually travels all the way to Australia to delve into her past. After the successful novels *Walpurgis Murder*, *Sauschläger's Paradise*, and *The Segeberg Connection, the Lübeck Marzipan Corpse, and the Harz Roller*, this is the fourth story featuring Lilly Höschen.
Volume 5: The Dead of the Silver Eel
Silbernaal, an old mining settlement in the Harz Mountains: For centuries, people here worked in ore mining. The darkest chapter in its history occurred during the Nazi era through the exploitation of forced laborers to maintain the war economy.
Nearly seventy years ago, a murder was committed here over a buried treasure. The crime was never solved. Then it happens again. To solve it, Inspector Schneider must delve deep into the past.
Volume 6: Murderous Journey through the Harz Mountains
Lilly Höschen's old friend Ferdinand leads a quiet life in Braunlage. He lives in a beautiful, old estate and enjoys his retirement. The house has only one flaw: a painting that has hung there for generations sometimes changes as if by magic. And shortly afterward, someone dies.
When, after many years, the picture changes again and the house is taken over by all sorts of visitors, the tranquility comes to an abrupt end. Ferdinand asks Lilly for help. The eccentric old lady from the Upper Harz Mountains is determined to finally solve the mysterious affair in her friend's house. In doing so, she gets caught up in a tangle of sometimes ludicrous entanglements. While those involved react rather recklessly to the events, Lilly, with her practical nature and sharp wit, takes matters into her own hands.
Volume 7: Lilly travels to the moon in a zeppelin
To get straight to the point: 83-year-old retired senior high school teacher Lilly Höschen is capable of quite a lot. But she doesn't become an astronaut in this novel. Instead, she gets involved in the adventurous family history of three brothers who run their grandfather's soda factory and claim to be descended from a Venetian family of dwarves. Their mother once accidentally married the wrong man, which, in retrospect, proved to be a blessing. While searching for their ancestors' treasure, the sons, known to everyone only by their nicknames Liptegei, Zeppelin, and Mond (Moon), find a mummified corpse in the cellar. Shortly afterward, a young girl disappears without a trace, dramatically changing the family's life. Many years later, the daughter of one of the brothers is kidnapped. Luckily, they are friends with Lilly Höschen, who won't rest until she has uncovered all the connections between past and present events.
Volume 8: Family Reunion with a Corpse
It's a totally crazy family story that Lilly Höschen is being served up. The twins Giovanni and Raphael Saufklever, now in their fifties, are visiting their old teacher and chatting late into the night. The next evening, a family reunion is taking place at a hotel in Goslar, to which Lilly gladly accepts the invitation, eager to meet these curious people she's learned so much about. Upon arriving at the hotel, she witnesses a strange crime. Now the eccentric old lady is in her element, investigating alongside the police, who, thanks to her help, are able to quickly solve the case. As the detectives, exhausted but happy, are about to call it a day, they receive a call from Lilly Höschen: "I've got another skeleton in the closet."
A family history spanning eight decades, full of tragedy and comedy, love, hate, and passion – this is the backdrop for two crimes that this family confronts during their reunion. Suddenly, events from almost half a century ago come back into play.
Band 9 : Alfies Bestattungsladen
Death is a constant, but the eccentric undertaker Alfons Witzki – known to everyone as Alfie – doesn't always get the job of handling the funeral arrangements in a manner befitting his status. The traditional family business from Goslar is particularly struggling with cheap competition. At least Lilly Höschen, an old family friend, occasionally brings in customers. So Alfie comes up with one outlandish idea after another to boost the stagnant business.
When a young girl from the neighborhood is violently murdered, Rebecca, the Witzkis' adult daughter, finds her seemingly perfect world shattered. It takes her a long time to realize that her own life is also in danger.
Band 10 : Mordserbe
A gruesome double murder turns young lawyer Amadeus Besserdich into a billionaire virtually overnight. His business partners leave him their shares in a mysterious company. To claim his inheritance and shed light on the events that have turned his life upside down, he travels to America. When he discovers how the enormous fortune that now belongs to him came about, he wants to get rid of it as quickly as possible. But it's too late. Apparently, someone is also trying to kill him. While Amadeus goes into hiding with his family, two female detectives and the FBI are frantically searching for the murderers. Of course, Amadeus's great-aunt Lilly Höschen and her friend Gretel aren't idle either, investigating in their own way. Just when they think they've caught the culprit, the real chaos begins. To make matters worse, the elderly ladies also have to contend with a deranged stalker, an overweight scientist, and a Chinese businessman who tells everyone he's not wearing underwear. Despite the seriousness of the subject matter, beloved series characters in this tenth crime novel from the author provide plenty of opportunities for the reader to laugh. George Clooney makes a cameo appearance in the book.
Volume 11: Evil over the small town
There are old houses that tell stories. Lilly Höschen's old friend Regine grew up in such a house. She knows a story about the evil that occurred there and whose effects are still felt today. As she tells Lilly everything, the evil spreads further and further, and a catastrophe threatens the small town.
Volume 12: Of Old Books and Skeletons in the Cellar
Old Miss Lilly Höschen has uncovered many a criminal scheme. This time, she teams up with a bookseller who discovers an old book and a secret grave after a cellar wall collapses in her house. The book, dating back to Gutenberg's time and delving deep into the history of the Harz town of Bad Lauterberg, also contains clues to a treasure said to have been hidden there since the 15th century. Together with the bookseller and an old professor, Lilly sets out on a quest – and finds herself in danger. For there are other interested parties: a secret society that will stop at nothing to achieve its goals...
Volume 13: In the Cold Valley
On the treetop walkway in Bad Harzburg, Lilly Höschen and her friend Gretel Kuhfuß witness a bizarre murder. The perpetrator, who pushes an old man to his death, looks just like the German Chancellor. To the dismay of the police, Chief Public Prosecutor Cesarine Zicke-Sandelholz appears and interferes in the investigation. The woman, who resembles the Valkyrie from Wagner's opera, makes the mistake of picking a fight with Lilly. Then another murder occurs in the same place and in the same manner. Again, the victim is an old man. What connects the two victims? Are there other people whose lives are in danger? The investigators—and Lilly Höschen herself—must delve deep into the past to get to the bottom of the murders.
Volume 14: Fried Potatoes with Champagne
Lilly Höschen's former students, Sibylle and Manfred, return home after twenty years in America. Manfred opens a luxury restaurant in the tranquil half-timbered town of Duderstadt, where, in his eccentric way, he sometimes locks complaining guests in the goat shed. His wife, Sibylle, is a completely different character. But is she really a contract killer who wants to get rid of Lilly's great-nephew, Amadeus? And what role does the former chief public prosecutor, Cesarine Zicke-Sandelholz, play? The now 86-year-old "Miss" from the Upper Harz Mountains has her hands full. To get answers to her questions and find out why some of the gourmet restaurant's guests are getting involved in ludicrous crimes, she travels to the Eichsfeld region several times. On top of that, a detective from the State Criminal Police Office (LKA) gets on her nerves so much that Lilly does everything she can to drive him crazy.
Volume 15: Sauschläger's Valley of Lamentation
They still exist: the Sauschlägers, a picture-perfect family from the Upper Harz region. With brazen directness, unconventional business acumen, and a language that some thought was extinct, they master their lives.
Several years ago, they had dug holes on their property for the Russian mafia, for a hefty sum, to make unwanted individuals disappear. Now, the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) is suddenly at their door, searching for a high-ranking official who has vanished without a trace. To make matters worse, a man appears who could easily be mistaken for a ghost. In this situation, only one person can help them: their old friend, Lilly Höschen.
Volume 16: Ten Little Teachers
Which student hasn't at some point harbored murderous thoughts about one teacher or another? Teachers who ridicule you in front of the class, instill fear, humiliate you, ruin your graduation, and even derive some satisfaction from it. Two men with such experiences meet by chance, reminisce about their school days, and decide to act on their desires for revenge. Their list includes ten candidates.
Volume 17: Go to Hell, Birdman
Young editor Waldemar Möser, who has been annoyed by his ridiculous name his whole life, is assigned to look after a prominent writer. When the writer reveals that the criminal activities depicted in his new book are based on reality, both are put in danger. To escape potential assassination attempts, they travel from Munich to the tranquil Harz Mountains. But their neighbor is an old lady named Lilly Höschen, who is known for her uncanny ability to attract crime.
Volume 18: Lilly and the Lust Murderers
For sixteen-year-old Lilly, the post-war years are a time of discovering her femininity and driving the adults, especially her teachers, to distraction with her provocative behavior. She takes life lightly until the day her friend is raped. As a young student, she witnesses a sex murder that remains unsolved. Throughout her life, she experiences further murders that follow the same ritual. Are the killers to be found among her own circle? Is her lover even involved in these gruesome events? Only in her old age do these questions find answers, when a dramatic showdown occurs at the opening of an art exhibition.
